A beautiful cake, so easy to handle and pack, the room note for me was acceptable, I quite like the smell of latakia and can never understand when there is so much comotion about it. It's like coffee---I adore a perfectly balanced cup of single origin SL24 varietal Kenyan, but at a certain point, it's about the transaction. My Favorite Latakia forward blend, not for the smoker who only likes a touch of latakia, it has enough Burley and Virginias to keep it interesting, but the Latakia will take over. It is aromatic in a campfire smoked meats kind of way, a little spicy, and just enjoyable. Made with the Latakia lover in mind, Pirate Kake is a pressed blend from Cornell & Diehl with medium strength and a substantial taste. After the bowl is finished youll know for many hours that youve smoked lots of Latakia by the shear amount of oils that coat your mouth. I wish there was a more consistent taste throughout on this one. That being said, this stuff is good enough to drive to the next state to enjoy. Burns consistently once lit. C&D Pirate Kake was among them. It is not the smoothest and certainly not the roughest but it is full of flavor and delicious in my opinion. Burns very cool & doesn't require many, if any, relights. Penzance is good but it has no taste next to this. The "Ham Bone" aspect disappeared. I took this to mean that the Pirate Kake was very moist - and that is the case. While I love it now, I did not enjoy my first bowl. Arrrr -- shiver me timbers -- Pirate Kake is the second blend Ive smoked in as many days that has bewitched me into thinking there were Virginias mixed into it (apparently, based on a couple of other reviews, I wasnt the only one to be so fooled).
